Update : We’re enough to start! Let’s go…

4 12 2007

I would like to thank all the people who showed their interest in MP so far, it’s encouraging. I think the first meetup is going to be very interesting and we will be surprised to see the caliber of Montreal Pythoners. That being said, I’m certain there are many more who haven’t heard about Montreal Python, and we need to reach out to as many people as possible (hint: please spread the word).

I would like to have some feedback about the following matters:

  1. What do you think about inviting Soft. Eng./ Comp. Sci. students from local universities? Do you know any? What’s the best way?
  2. Would you like MP to be organized in the open? Using a wiki for example (like BarCamp)?

Thanks again and drop us a word.

What do you mean by inviting university students? As speakers? Or to get them involved in Python and Montreal Python?

If the latter, having a few posters on the right notice board should do the trick. As well as maybe an infomail with link to MP requested to be forwarded to the CS/SE students via the program secretary. Though not sure how amenable they are to passing the mail along.

Actually, this link might be the best way to get people to try Python for the first time :-)

@Punit: I was thinking about opening some eyes to the existence and relevance of Python by inviting interested students to our meetups, etc. In my student days, I would have loved to go to a meetup where I could see real world experienced programmers talk about a language they love.

That being said, some students might do really interesting talks? There’s the potential to offer a completely different point of view.

@daniel: I saw that link on digg (top result!). I don’t think Python needs to be sold, it just needs to be told :) Maybe showing a community of programmers most of whom have full-time jobs working with Python might encourage some students to invest more time working with this beautiful language.

Never ask people’s approval, ideas, sugestions. You will ended up doing nothing. Dictature is the only way to lead an OpenSource group.

Go ahead and show the example, take the lead, make things happen. Many other groups have fallow in the democratie trap and are ending up doing nothing.

Just my 2cents, based on my experience.
Keep it up.
